Some people are horrified when they hear their doctor say they are overweight, let alone being told they are obese. Obesity is a major worldwide issue requiring those who are obese to take charge of their lives, make changes and lose the weight otherwise they will suffer major health consequences. The World Health Organisation defines being overweight and obesity as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health.
What's the real risk if obese people don't lose weight? Basically, the more fat that is carried, the higher the health risk. The risk of life threatening diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and strokes is very real. Then there are the chronic diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, polycystic ovarian syndrome, stress incontinence, cataracts and gout - all have a major negative impact on health.
If you haven't been to the doctor yet and had your Body Mass Index or BMI measured, you can check your's at BMI Calculator . BMI is used to determine if a person's weight is in a healthy range.
What can be done if you are overweight or obese? There are a number of options, the most drastic being Gastric Banding and Balloon surgery. This is the last resort after all other attempts at weight loss have failed and is known as minimal invasive surgery which still carries significant risks to the patient. Gastric Banding is done laparoscopically through the abdomen where a band, cuff or ring is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a smaller stomach and gives a sensation of fullness after eating a small meal. The problem for many patients is they are left with side effects such as nausea, diarrhea or vomiting and are often only able to eat a limited number of foods. Proteins, carbohydrates, some vegetables, alcohol and caffeinated drinks may not be well tolerated – each person will be different in their responses to the surgery.
Balloon surgery is where a small balloon device is inserted into the stomach through the esophagus and inflated to make the available space in the stomach smaller, resulting in a feeling of fullness after eating a small meal. If a larger meal is eaten it can often be regurgitated.
There are diets and exercise programs that will help people to reduce their weight and most have tried at least one at some point in their life. Stress plays a big part often in why people overeat and it must be addressed. For many, overeating can be a compensation for something. Addressing stress, dealing with the issues and taking part in a smart eating and exercise plan will certainly help.
Some people have genetic dispositions or medical conditions that will prevent them from losing weight no matter what they do. It's so frustrating for people who genuinely want to reduce their weight and find they don't achieve their goals. Understanding why we overeat, or gravitate towards unhealthy food is the first step to losing weight. A diet won't do it alone, nor will just exercise.
Overweight and obesity are preventable, however, the rates are rapidly rising and have a major impact on health and health care costs. Understanding why processed and convenience foods are bad for us is important. Many people don't understand that processed and convenience foods are those pre-packaged foods we buy from the supermarket or take out foods such as burgers, fries, pizza, fried chicken etc. A diet that contains lots of fruits, vegetables and some lean meats and fish is best for us.
Unfortunately, many people don't like or know how to cook these healthy foods and so keep eating junk food. Snack foods like potato or corn chips, cheetos, peanuts, pretzels, cakes, pies and soda drinks stack on the weight very quickly. The alternative to being overweight or obese is to be slimmer and in a healthy weight range.
The first steps to a smart weight loss program are:-
1. Detox and cleanse the digestive system and liver
2. Re-colonise the digestive system with good bacteria
3. Replace junk and fat foods with healthy foods (that's fruit and veges!)
4. Exericse
